Hidden in Plain Sight: Choosing Wine at the Supermarket

Why the quiet bottle on the shelf might be the one worth taking home
The supermarket wine aisle.

Because this is where many of us actually buy our wine. Not always for a big occasion. Sometimes it’s for dinner, a BBQ, a gift, a weekend catch-up, or simply because we want to try something new.

And for anyone looking to explore wine a little more, the supermarket can be a good place to start.

But it can also be overwhelming.

Rows of bottles. Bright specials. Familiar brands. Gold medals. Big displays. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Australian Shiraz. Pinot Noir. Rosé. Prosecco.

So how do you choose?

Well, here’s one tip I use myself.

Look where everyone else isn’t looking.
My Number One Supermarket Wine Tip

When I’m choosing wine in a supermarket, I don’t always go for the bottle with the biggest display.

In fact, I often look for the opposite.

I look for the wine that doesn’t have many facings.

In supermarket language, a “facing” is how many spaces a product has on the shelf. If a wine has five or six facings, it means there are multiple bottles of the same wine lined up across the shelf.

That usually tells you it’s a big-volume wine. A popular wine. A wine the supermarket expects to sell a lot of.

Nothing wrong with that.

But when I’m looking for something new, something interesting, something with a bit more character, I often look for the bottle that only has one facing.

Just sitting there quietly.

Not shouting.
Not stacked high.
Not taking over the aisle.

Just one little space on the shelf.

And that’s where the treasure can be.

Why the Quiet Bottle Can Be the Interesting One

I deal with wine buyers on a daily basis, and this is a common thread I see all the time.

Some of the hidden wines, the ones with only one facing, are often there for a reason.

Maybe the buyer tasted it and loved it.
Maybe it adds something different to the range.
Maybe it comes from a smaller producer.
Maybe it’s not a mass-market wine, but it has real quality.
Maybe it’s there because someone in the buying team believed it deserved a spot.

And often, those are the bottles that can offer great value and great tasting experiences.

They might not have the biggest marketing budget behind them.

They might not have the loudest label.

They might not be the wine everyone is grabbing for the Friday night BBQ.

But they can be the wines that surprise you.

And I love that.

Don’t Only Follow the Crowd

In New Zealand and Australia, our supermarket wine aisles are full of strong brands.

We know the names. We’ve seen the labels. We trust them because they feel familiar.

And there is comfort in that.

But wine is also about discovery.

Sometimes the best bottle is not the one with the biggest discount sticker.

Sometimes it’s not the one at eye level.

Sometimes it’s the one tucked away on the shelf, sitting quietly with only one row of bottles, waiting for someone curious enough to pick it up.

That’s how I like to shop for wine.

I don’t just ask, “What is everyone buying?”

I ask:

“Why did this wine make it onto the shelf”

That question changes everything.

A Simple Way to Choose Your Next Supermarket Wine

Next time you’re in the supermarket wine aisle, try this.

Start with what you feel like drinking.

White, red, rosé, sparkling and keep it simple.

Then look at the region.

New Zealand? Australia? France? Italy? Spain?

Then look at the grape variety.

Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Riesling, Albariño, Grenache, whatever catches your eye.

But then, before you grab the obvious bottle, take one extra moment.

Look around the edges.

Look at the bottles with fewer facings.

Look at the wines that don’t seem to be part of the big display.

Look at the label. Read the back. See who made it. See where it comes from.

That little moment of curiosity might lead you to a bottle with more personality, more story, and better value than you expected.

The Wine Chief Supermarket Rule

My supermarket rule is simple:

Don’t just buy the wine that is shouting the loudest. Sometimes the best bottle is the one whispering from the shelf.

That one-facing wine might be there because a buyer took a chance on it.

And sometimes, when a buyer has taken a chance, it means there is something worth discovering.

So next time you’re choosing wine at the supermarket, don’t panic.

Take your time.

Trust your curiosity.

And remember:

The hidden gems are often hiding in plain sight.

Much love,
The Wine Chief
